The development history of UNIVER.SYS traced as far back to the late 2010s, though it can be divided into 3 versions: Silicon Medley, 1.0, and 2.0.
Silicon Medley (Before 2022)
In the midst of the Rizzonen (then SpacePuffer)'s disillusionment over the English OS-tan fandom's impression of "canonical" lore, they found interest in Silicon Valley's history, especially during the rise of microcomputers/personal computers. They envisioned a fanon/derivative OS-tan universe that focused on the characters from the microcomputer boom era, which in the English "canon" tend to be overlooked. Thus, a fanon called Silicon Medley was created in mid-2020.
Silicon Medley aimed to be a fantastical retelling of microcomputer revolution, setting the story in the real world. It was in this fanon that human developers called Admins were implemented. Initially they were supposed to be maintainers of the OS-tans and not as authoritarian as they were in the older settings, but the execution was poor due to attempts to make them "historically accurate" enough. This attempt of compromising fantasy and accuracy proved to be exhausting.
Another case of failed compromise was the poorly-written relationships between the OS-tans and the Admins, not to mention the often-dramatic rivalries between OS-tans, which basically was legacy cruft from the English OS-tan shared universe.
UNIVER.SYS 1.0 (2022–2024)
After Silicon Medley was abandoned due to its convoluted plot and lack of direction, development of UNIVER.SYS, an original universe project based on technology gijinka yet separate from the widely known OS-tan concept, started in late 2022.
The core species were called TANs (Technological Anthropomorphs), a nod to the OS-tans. The world, initially, was set up as a constructed world called Innovatia. UNIVER.SYS embraceed artistic liberties instead of adhering to historical accuracy. Humans coexisted in Innovatia in the form of Admins and Developers, though their relationship with the TANs are reciprocal and they don't have total control over their fates.
Notable features implemented in this version were fictional names for the Ensembles (city-states representing real-life companies) and the TAN characters. There were also the concept of TANs as idol singers, inspired by the author's interest in Japanese idol culture. However, this didn't last long.
UNIVER.SYS 2.0 (2025–present)
Due to several worldbuilding problems in UNIVER.SYS 1.0, UNIVER.SYS 2.0 was developed in early 2025 to address them.
Innovatia was renamed to the eponymous UNIVER.SYS, and I renamed TANs to Techne (both singular and plural) to emphasize their capabilities as creators and to separate them from the OS-tans.
UNIVER.SYS 2.0 also reclassified the Techne, shifting from technology type categories (mainframes, operating systems, mobile devices, etc.) to the Arts System, and set the timeframe to a post-human era, removing the concept of Admins and Developers in the process. In this version, humans no longer existed, hence no human software developers.
Ensembles and Techne Units were also overhauled to not paint them as explicitly working with, or on the behalf of their Ensembles' government in order to avoid unfortunate implications. Another carryover from previous versions, which is the retrocomputing-based faction, was removed, as there is no definite present time and to not render certain Techne based on older technologies as obsolete.
