Ian's open-minded attitude and dry humor despite his serious facade is inspired by the IBM PC's open architecture, which allowed various peripherals.
His enjoyment for games, especially simulation games, refers to the first version of Microsoft Flight Simulator released for the IBM PC.^[1]
Ian's color palette is derived from IBM PC hardware and PC DOS' software boxes.^[2]^[3]

Ian is the Scottish Gaelic variant of John, which is often considered a generic/average person name. The IBM PC in particular was very influential, marketed for average consumers of that time, and spawned many clones.^[4]
- His last name Cheswick is derived from IBM PC's codename, Project Chess.
Ian's affinity for silent films is inspired by the IBM PC Charlie Chaplin impersonator ads.^[5]
Amy and Ian were good friends before their respective debuts, and they went to the same training academy.
After the end of C²'s alliance with Myriad Starters, Ian helped his successor Lazuli with her endeavors, though he often questions the lengths she would go to prove herself as capable and "superior" than Myriad Starters.
